Wooden Decking

Hand-selected hardwood and treated pine, laid over a properly engineered frame and finished in the tone you want. Real grain, real warmth, fully restorable.

We only quote species we would put on our own homes. Each is graded on site before it goes down — bowed or shaken boards get sent back.

Balau

25+ years

The workhorse of South African decking. Dense, oily and naturally resistant to borer and rot — ideal for pool surrounds and coastal homes.

Origin: Southeast Asian hardwood
Tone: Deep red-brown, silvering to grey if left unsealed

Garapa

20–25 years

A lighter, calmer alternative to Balau that stays noticeably cooler underfoot in full Highveld sun. Beautiful with a clear sealer.

Origin: South American hardwood
Tone: Pale honey-gold with a fine, even grain

Saligna

15–20 years

Locally grown and well-priced. Needs disciplined sealing but rewards it with a rich, characterful surface.

Origin: SA-grown eucalyptus
Tone: Warm pink-brown, darkens with age

SA Pine (H4 CCA)

12–18 years

The budget-friendly option. Pressure treated to H4 for ground contact and finished in the stain colour of your choice.

Origin: Locally grown, pressure treated
Tone: Light straw, takes stain readily

Finishes and detailing

Timber decks live or die on the details. Ours come standard with:

Every cut end sealed before fixing — the single biggest cause of rot.
304 or 316 stainless steel screws, countersunk and plugged where requested.
Consistent 5 mm gapping for drainage and seasonal movement.
Mitred edge boards and a fascia to hide the substructure.
Two coats of penetrating sealer in clear, teak, walnut or ebony.
Optional whitewash lime finish for a coastal, weathered look.

Maintenance rhythm

Every 6 months

Sweep and wash with a deck cleaner, then check for lifted screws or splinters.

Every 12–18 months

Light sand and a fresh coat of decking sealer or oil — two coats on the sun-facing side.

Every 5–7 years

Full strip and re-seal to reset the colour, or let the deck silver naturally if you prefer.

Repairs & restoration

We also repair and restore existing wooden decking

A tired deck is rarely a write-off. We assess the substructure first, replace only what has failed, then re-finish the whole surface so old and new boards read as one deck.

Inspection & moisture check

We lift a board or two, probe the joists and bearers, and check ventilation and drainage before quoting a cent.

Substructure repair

Rotten joists, sagging bearers and failed ledger fixings are replaced in H4-treated timber or galvanised steel.

Board replacement

Cracked, cupped or borer-damaged boards are swapped for matched timber, with all cut ends sealed before fixing.

Re-fixing & levelling

Rusted nails and popped screws come out; everything is re-fixed with stainless screws and gaps reset for drainage.

Strip, wash & sand

Old sealer is stripped, the deck is cleaned of algae and grey fibre, then sanded smooth to remove splinters.

Seal & hand back

Two coats of penetrating sealer or oil in your chosen tone, plus a simple care schedule to keep it that way.
